Chondromalacia

Chondromalacia

What is Chondromalacia or Runners Knee?

Chondromalacia in its simplest term is knee pain. Most pains in the knee stem from over-use, sports injury or arthritis. Chondromalacia or ‘runners knee’ is an abnormal softening of the cartilage around the knee, that lessens the shock absorption and creates friction and pain.

Causes of Chondromalacia or Runners Knee :

When the knee moves, the cartilage surrounding it facilitates a smooth movement.  When Chondromalacia occurs, this cartilage wears away and so the movement of the knee is less fluid and the knee cap rubs against the lower end of the femur.

The repetition of any movement involving the knee roughens the cartilage underneath the kneecap. As such, there are varying degrees of severity, ranging from a disturbance to the cartilage, to a complete wipe out of any cartilage.

In extreme cases the knee cap can tear off a piece of particular cartilage or even bone. This disorder is more common in athletes who take part in higher impact, repetition sports such as running and skiing.

It can also be caused by

  • Trauma
  • Overuse
  • Muscle weakness
  • Age
  • Poor skeletal alignment
  • Poor gait

Symptoms of Chondromalacia or Runners Knee :

The condition can usually be identified by a dull pain around the lower region of the knee cap. The pain will aggravate during movement or exercise.

Relief and Prevention of Chondromalacia or Runners Knee :

The main relief with the condition will come with a reduction in the swelling around the knee, as it will lessen the pressure in the area. So application of ice at intermittant periods will help.

Rest is a key component of the rehabilitation phase. Sufferers should only engage in low impact activities such as swimming or walking, and make sure that they stretch thoroughly before commencing any exercise and use a knee brace if necessary. Wearing the correct footwear that is designed to support the feet and align the body is also recommended to make sure that you’re not putting any excess weight on the knee at an angle that will cause or aggravate the condition. If the condition persists then you should consult your GP.

Customer experience of Chondromalacia or Runners Knee :

"A very thorough and professional company with amazing products! I was going to quit my job, due to it requiring me to be on my feet all day every day. I suffer from foot pronation and, in turn, this caused painful knee joints with too much walking about. But these shoes stopped all that straight away. I can now come home from work and go for a run as well! Even my physiotherapist's prescription was to keep wearing the shoes!"- Shelley, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom

"Love Those Shoes have completely transformed my Life. I had to have a replacement kneecap and the problem with my knee caused problems with my right foot. The knee did everything in the exercise line but I was in constant pain. I came across a promotion for your shoes in She magazine and took a chance in sending for a pair. As soon as I put them on I felt as if my feet had "come home".I now have 4 pairs and don't wear any of my old shoes, which have all been ECCO. I think your shoes are realigning my posture. I must also say that whenever I have ordered your shoes I have had "next day" delivery. Thank you." - M.R.Norris, Kent, United Kingdom

"I have had ME since August last year and it has left me with really painful knees, these shoes are great and are the only ones that I have found that help relieve the pain and making walking a pleasure again. I would love to see more styles suitable for work, perhaps some lighter weight mules." - Miss Jayne Elliott, Essex, United Kingdom
