What are Heavy Legs?
When the legs feel heavy it is usually caused by a dysfunction on the vascular system that results in swelling or Oedema.
Symptoms of Heavy Legs :
Legs will feel tired and heavy and can result in an overall feeling of lethargy. These symptoms may worsen when standing for long periods or walking but will improve with rest and elevation.
Causes of Heavy Legs:
There a few conditions that can result in the feeling of Heavy Legs:
- Lymphedema is a very serious condition that causes swelling in the body’s tissues. This swelling normally occurs in the arms or legs, although in some cases it has been found in the chest, head or genitals. The more severe cases can result in immobility. The condition is caused by damage to, or obstruction in, the lymphatic system which is made up from a series of vessels that are spread throughout the body which help to fight infection and drain fluid from the tissue in the body. If this system isn’t working properly then it will result in a swelling of the legs causing them to feel heavy.
- Varicose Veins are swollen and enlarged veins that appear dark blue or purple. They are also bumpy and look twisted. They can indicate poor circulation in the legs and thus lead to swelling and heaviness.
- Chronic Venous Insufficiency results from DVT. It results in pigmentation, rashes, and sores on the legs and can lead to swelling and heavy legs also. CVI can occur during long periods on immobility.
Relief and Prevention of Heavy Legs :
Common treatments include:
